We tend to look outside ourselves as to why we are happy or unhappy. Thus people who are happy think the world is pretty good (and thus not interested in changing it too much). Unhappy people likewise blame the outside world and want to effect change

 

“Faith in a holy cause is to a considerable extent a substitute for the lost faith In ourselves Mass movements (MM) vs. practical organizations (PO): POs are based on opportunities for self-advancement and rely on self-interest. MMs want to discard the current self, to create a movement that will create a new self, one tied to the glory or great ideas of the movement.

By placing faith in the MM, one can avoid the ramifications of lost faith in one’s self.

It is not actual suffering, but the taste of better things that causes revolt.
